The day which marks the beginning
of unending festivities of five-day long Diwali Celebrations is called
Dhanteras, also known as Dhanvantari Triodasi. It is celebrated on triodasi of
the Krishna Paksha, which means the 13th lunar day of the Kartik month
according to Hindu calendar, usually lying between October and November.
The word Dhanteras denotes
wealth. It is believed that on this day Lord Dhanwantari came out of the ocean.
People worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi together and pray for well being
and prosperous life. It is auspicious to do a purchase of new things especially
precious gold and jewelry, to please Goddess Laxmi. The bringing of new stuff
denotes the coming of Goddess Laxmi to your home and pray to her to keep
visiting the upcoming whole year. A girl child born on this day is also
considered fortunate as it signifies coming of Goddesses Laxmi in the house.
It holds an importance in business communities
and they do customary purchases of valuable metals on this day. People buy new
account books and place them before Goddess Laxmi for her blessings. New
businesses are opened on this day because people believe that business started
